IRCCS Rehabilitation Center (Italy)
Background
Motor impairment is widespread in people with neurological diseases. One of the main impacts is that it reduces the level of autonomy in activities of daily living. The rehabilitation process can be long and complex requiring both on-site and, at a later stage, remote support.
Problems
- Treatment efficacy: At IRCCS San Camillo almost 90% of the rehabilitation care is provided in one-to-one (patient/therapist) settings. Appointments are scheduled on a weekly basis.
- Safety conditions: Adverse events are registered manually. This process entirely relies on the physical presence of therapists.
- Management: Treatment plans are also organized manually, which involves collecting information from each single Operative Unit of the Neurorehabilitation Department and allocating slots and therapists according to available resources.
- Accessibility and monitoring: The rehabilitation facility is located in a remote and hard-to-reach area (island setting).
Objectives
- Improve treatment efficacy by increasing the patient to therapist ratio
- Register duration and effectiveness of therapeutic protocols
- Improve security & safety conditions in hospital settings
- Improve healthcare management capabilities
- Improve availability of telerehabilitation protocols
The solution
A smart rehab environment enabled by Vimar View Wireless System, which allows collecting and sharing reliable data about people’s presence in an area. The system is enriched by a new interface for controlling smart devices based on KnX IoT 3rd party API to allow data exchange. Collected data are made available through a standardized API and can be potentially integrated with further monitoring technologies.
Value Proposition
The system helps healthcare facilities to improve the managing and controlling capability of a physical environment. At the same time, it contributes to increasing the effectiveness of rehabilitation protocols and improving the organizational models of rehabilitation and care facilities.
